Baylie & Taras had a small, intimate destination wedding in Ithika, Greece. They wanted to celebrate their marriage with their friends in their hometown. They selected the Harper Center at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo because it provided the perfect setting for a casual night of fun.
When we initially started speaking with Baylie, she had desired a reception in modern, sleek black, white and gold. As we went through our discussion process, we learned that they were choosing to marry in Greece because they loved the culture of the Greeks. When asked what she specifically loved, her face lit up. She started discussing the outdoor cafes and the practice of meeting friends and neighbors for coffee before work every day. She loved the laid-back way of Greek life.
Baylie & Taras come from very tight Greek and Ukrainian cultures. Both cultures are known for their hospitality. They are also known for their tight-knit communities that support and share in each other's lives.
After seeing her face light up when she spoke of Ithika, Greece and the Greek and Ukrainian cultures, I couldn’t balance this warm, inviting culture and feel with a modern and sleek reception design.
I took a chance.
I designed a reception around the colors, culture, and vibe of Ithika, Greece. The terracotta tile roof tops, natural stone beaches, fresh citrus fruits and open-air cafes with wicker lanterns hanging overhead with the soft Mediterranean breeze. I wanted to design a space where friends and family felt comfortable, like they could sit all night talking, relaxing, eating, dancing, and playing outdoor games. Basically, I wanted to create the “little town square” where time was lost enjoying life and friends.
When I presented the design board, Baylie was on board. She was more excited than I dreamed she would be. Off we went planning a Greek and Ukrainian menu featuring a large Mezze display, Ukrainian station, and the couple’s favorite comfort foods from the US. I also created an outdoor café that served iced Greek Frappes and Turkish Style coffee that paid homage to the countless dates in which Baylie & Taras spent the evenings and weekends getting to know each other over a cup of Ukrainian coffee in his parent’s home.
The night went just as we had hoped. Guests milled about, enjoyed food, and one guest even said “This is the most perfect place, perfect design, and perfect evening. I don’t want to leave.”
